About Chronic Kidney Disease

Approximately 20 million people, or 11% of the US adult population, have Chronic Kidney Disease.1 Early detection and treatment of CKD will help delay progression of kidney failure and subsequent complications like secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a serious condition that can occur in patients who have reduced kidney function. This condition is characterized by an increased level of parathyroid hormone causing long term effects such as cardiovascular, nervous system and skeletal complications, among others.

The National Kidney Foundation's K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Bone Metabolism and Disease in Chronic Kidney Disease provides guidelines for the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism.
